Belle has had a difficult and confusing start to life. At only 1 year old she has already had 4 homes and spent time in our rescue center. The main contributing factor in her inconsistent upbringing was the huge variety in her education, which ranged from different owners trying to teach her in different ways or some owners simply leaving her to figure life out for herself. As a result she is very unsure in many situations and her overall confidence is low. Fortunately Belle is actually a fantastic dog and once she has built a little trust in you she shows a really positive approach to life. She loves people and giving you a big hug is her trade mark greeting!
What impresses me most about Belle is how readily she takes direction and guidance. When she first came into the rescue she was very reactive to many stimulus often displaying lunging and barking behaviours. I’ve only spent a few short sessions working with Belle at North Clwyd Animal Rescue and have been really impressed with her willingness to learn and speed in which she accepts new ways to approach problems. One such session was dealing with her pulling on lead and lunging at passing cars. In only a 30 minute session she was not only walking in a much more acceptable manner but also sniffing and exploring all the interesting scents the countryside had to offer. In regards to lunging at cars; the intensity reduced greatly the calmer she was onlead over all. After exposing her to several cars/4x4s/trucks in a calmer more structured way, coupled with some positive reinforcement & distraction, she soon began to pay almost no attention to vehicles and instead continue sniffing and exploring. (See the video in her profile on this session). This showed me her problematic behaviours are simply symptoms of the stress she is under when dealing with situations she isn’t confident in. Therefore all she needs is educating in those situations to prove there really is nothing in life to worry about!
Basically Belle is a sweet loving dog with a huge potential. All she requires is a calm consistent education from somebody how has proved themselves calm, consistent and thus trustworthy.
